Mary Celeste
Famous abandoned vessel
The Mary Celeste was an American merchant ship found adrift in the Atlantic in 1872 with no crew aboard, though the vessel was seaworthy and provisions remained.
The mystery of what happened to the ten people aboard has never been solved.
The name has become shorthand for any mysteriously abandoned place: The office was like the Mary Celeste—coffee still warm, but everyone gone.
