rescue ship
Distress call responder
A rescue ship is a vessel dispatched or designated to save people in distress at sea—from sinking ships, downed aircraft, or other maritime emergencies.
During wartime, rescue ships accompanied convoys to pick up survivors of torpedo attacks.
The term also applies to ships that retrieve astronauts after splashdown: The rescue ship reached the capsule within minutes of landing.
