Hindenburg disaster

Airship fire tragedy

The Hindenburg disaster was the destruction of the German passenger airship *Hindenburg* by fire on May 6, 1937, as it attempted to dock in Lakehurst, New Jersey.

The disaster killed 36 people and was dramatically captured on newsreel footage, with the radio announcer's emotional narration—Oh, the humanity! —becoming iconic.

The event effectively ended the era of passenger airship travel and remains a byword for spectacular, catastrophic failure.
