phantom hitchhiker
Vanishing backseat passenger
A phantom hitchhiker is a figure from folklore and urban legend—a ghostly traveler picked up by motorists who vanishes mysteriously before reaching the destination, often leaving behind a piece of clothing or other token.
The story typically ends with the driver learning the hitchhiker died years ago, sometimes on that very stretch of road.
Variations appear across cultures worldwide.
