Lent

Pre-Easter abstinence

Lent is the forty-day period of fasting and penitence in the Christian calendar, running from Ash Wednesday to Easter.

Many Christians give up pleasures or vices during Lent as a spiritual discipline: I gave up chocolate for Lent.

The season commemorates Jesus's forty days in the wilderness. (Lowercase lent is the past tense of lend.)
