alleluia

Joyful sacred shout

Alleluia is an exclamation of praise or thanksgiving to God, used especially in Christian worship and liturgical music.

It comes from Hebrew words meaning "praise the Lord." The word appears frequently in hymns, psalms, and choral works: The choir sang the alleluia.

Also spelled hallelujah, which is more common outside religious contexts.
