Laconia

Ancient Sparta's region

Laconia is a region in the southeastern Peloponnese of Greece, historically the territory of ancient Sparta.

The Spartans were famously terse in speech, which gives us the word laconic—brief to the point of seeming rude or indifferent.

The Laconians were known for their military discipline and few words.
