sophistical
Clever but fallacious
Sophistical describes reasoning that appears clever or valid but is actually flawed or deliberately misleading.
The word traces to the Sophists, ancient Greek teachers who taught persuasion techniques critics considered more concerned with winning arguments than finding truth.
A sophistical argument may use logical fallacies while sounding convincing: His sophistical defense impressed the jury but collapsed under scrutiny.
