rack-and-pinion

Linear motion converter

Rack-and-pinion is a mechanism that converts rotational motion into linear motion, or vice versa.

A circular gear (the pinion) meshes with a flat toothed bar (the rack).

The system appears most commonly in steering mechanisms: rack-and-pinion steering connects the steering wheel's rotation to the side-to-side movement of the wheels.
