Baja California

Western Mexico landmass

Baja California is a long, narrow peninsula extending south from California into Mexico, separating the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of California.

The name means "Lower California" in Spanish.

The peninsula is divided into two Mexican states: Baja California (north) and Baja California Sur (south).

Americans often use "Baja" alone when referring to the region: We're driving down to Baja for the weekend.
