freethinker

Dogma's natural enemy

A freethinker forms opinions independently, rejecting authority and tradition—especially religious doctrine—in favor of reason and evidence.

The term emerged from Enlightenment debates and still carries a secular, skeptical connotation: He considered himself a freethinker who questioned everything.

It's often self-applied with pride, though critics may use it dismissively.
