Cutting
Dividing with blade
Cutting is the act of dividing something with a blade or sharp edge, or the piece removed: a cutting from the newspaper, plant cuttings for propagation.
As an adjective, cutting describes something sharp enough to penetrate—a cutting wind bites through clothing, a cutting remark wounds feelings.
The word often implies deliberate cruelty: Her cutting wit left no one unscathed.
In British usage, a cutting is also an excavated passage for a road or railway through higher ground.
