pruning

Cutting back plants

Pruning is the cutting away of parts from a plant—dead branches, excess growth, wayward shoots—to improve health, shape, or yield: The roses need pruning.

The term extends to any selective removal meant to strengthen what remains: pruning a budget, pruning a guest list, pruning unnecessary features from software.

In computing, pruning eliminates branches from a decision tree or search algorithm to improve efficiency.
