rootstock

Underground plant stem

Rootstock is the root system and lower stem onto which a cutting or bud from another plant is grafted.

The rootstock provides vigor, disease resistance, or size control while the grafted portion (the scion) determines the fruit or flower variety: Most commercial apple trees are grown on dwarfing rootstock.

In botany, rootstock also refers to a rhizome—a horizontal underground stem from which roots and shoots emerge.
