Argus

Hundred-eyed mythical guardian

Argus was a giant in Greek mythology with a hundred eyes, some always awake, making him the perfect watchman.

Hera set him to guard Io, and after Hermes killed him, his eyes were preserved in the peacock's tail.

The name now designates anything characterized by vigilant observation: The new security system is a digital Argus. (Lowercase argus describes watchful persons or eye-spotted animals.)
