Acheron

Greek death stream

Acheron is one of the rivers of the Greek underworld, across which the dead must pass.

In mythology, it flows through Hades alongside the Styx, Lethe, and other infernal rivers.

The name extends to any dark, gloomy region or the underworld itself: crossing the Acheron into death's realm.

A real river in Greece bears the name, which ancient Greeks associated with the entrance to Hades.
