British Rail

Former railway operator

British Rail was the state-owned railway system of Great Britain from 1948 to 1997, when it was privatized.

The name persists in British culture as shorthand for nationalized rail service, often invoked in debates about whether privatization improved or worsened train travel: Back in British Rail days, at least the fares were affordable.
