Attlee
Labour's transformative leader
Clement Attlee was British Prime Minister from 1945 to 1951, leading the Labour government that established the National Health Service and expanded the welfare state.
His name evokes postwar British socialism and the creation of modern social democracy.
Despite his famously modest demeanor—Churchill quipped he was "a modest man who has much to be modest about"—Attlee oversaw transformative domestic reforms.
