Bridgewater Canal

English industrial canal

The Bridgewater Canal is a waterway in northwest England, opened in 1761 to transport coal from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines at Worsley to Manchester.

Often called the first true canal of the Industrial Revolution, it demonstrated that artificial waterways could dramatically reduce transport costs, sparking Britain's canal-building era.
