Watergate

Presidential resignation cause

Watergate refers to the political scandal that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974, involving a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., and the subsequent cover-up.

The suffix -gate has since become productive in English, attached to any word to suggest scandal or controversy: Deflategate, Bridgegate.

Watergate changed how Americans view their government. (Lowercase watergate is a floodgate or sluice.)
