right of way

Passage privilege granted

Right of way is the legal right to proceed or pass through a space.

In traffic, it determines who goes first at an intersection: Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks.

It also means a strip of land where roads, railways, or utilities may be built, often across private property: The power company has a right of way through our back lot.

Someone who asserts right of way expects others to yield.
