Biafra

Failed African breakaway

Biafra was a secessionist state in southeastern Nigeria that existed from 1967 to 1970.

Its declaration of independence sparked the Nigerian Civil War, during which a blockade caused widespread famine that drew international attention and humanitarian response.

Images of starving Biafran children became iconic symbols of African humanitarian crisis.

The name still carries emotional weight among the Igbo people who comprised most of its population, and Biafran independence movements persist today.
