point break

Surfer's ideal wave

A point break is a wave that forms when a swell hits a point of land or rock jutting into the water, causing the wave to peel consistently in one direction.

Surfers prize point breaks for their long, predictable rides: Rincon is one of California's best point breaks.

The term gained wider recognition from the 1991 surf-heist film of the same name.
