Montezuma

Cortés's royal captive

Montezuma, also spelled Moctezuma, was the Aztec emperor who ruled when Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico in 1519.

His name survives in English primarily through the expression Montezuma's revenge, a humorous term for traveler's diarrhea, especially when contracted in Mexico—a darkly ironic nod to the devastating consequences the Spanish conquest brought to his people.
