metate

Mesoamerican grinding slab

A metate is a flat or slightly concave stone slab used for grinding grain, seeds, or other foods by hand.

Indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica and the American Southwest have used metates for thousands of years, typically with a handheld stone called a mano: She ground the corn on her grandmother's metate.

The word comes from Spanish, from Nahuatl.
