Great Mosque

Major Islamic sanctuary

A Great Mosque is the principal mosque of a city or region, typically the largest and most architecturally significant, where Friday prayers and major religious gatherings are held.

The term often translates Arabic *jāmiʿ* (congregational mosque) or designates historically important structures: the Great Mosque of Córdoba, the Great Mosque of Mecca.

Many cities have a building known simply as the Great Mosque, serving as the center of Islamic worship and community life.
