librettist

Opera text author

A librettist is a person who writes the text of an opera, musical, or other dramatic work set to music.

The librettist provides the words—dialogue, lyrics, stage directions—while the composer provides the score.

Some composers write their own librettos, but the roles are typically separate: Gilbert was the librettist to Sullivan's composer.
