wormgear
Helical reduction mechanism
A wormgear is a gear system where a threaded shaft (the worm) meshes with a toothed wheel, allowing motion to transfer between perpendicular axes.
The design permits the worm to turn the wheel but typically prevents the reverse, making it useful where controlled, one-directional movement matters: The wormgear in the tuning peg holds the string at tension.
