windpump

Prairie water lifter

A windpump is a windmill designed to pump water rather than grind grain.

The familiar multi-bladed wheel atop a tall frame, common on farms and ranches, draws groundwater for livestock or irrigation.

Windpumps were essential to settlement of arid regions before rural electrification: The old windpump still creaks in the wind, though the well ran dry decades ago.
