hydraulic ram
Pressure-powered water lifter
A hydraulic ram is a pump that uses the momentum of flowing water to force a portion of that water to a higher elevation than its source—no external power required.
Water flows downhill through a pipe; when a valve slams shut, the sudden pressure surge drives some water upward through a second pipe.
The device is simple, durable, and useful for moving water in remote locations.
Separately, a hydraulic ram is a piston-driven cylinder that converts fluid pressure into linear force, as in heavy machinery: The excavator's hydraulic rams lifted the boom.
