shaduf

Counterweighted water lifter

A shaduf is a hand-operated device for lifting water, used since ancient times for irrigation.

It consists of a long pole balanced on an upright frame, with a bucket at one end and a counterweight at the other.

The operator pulls the bucket down into a river or well, and the counterweight helps raise the filled bucket with minimal effort.

Still used along the Nile and in parts of Asia.
