shadoof

Bucket-raising pivot

A shadoof is a hand-operated device for lifting water, used since ancient times for irrigation.

It consists of a long pole balanced on an upright frame, with a bucket at one end and a counterweight at the other.

The operator pulls down the bucket to fill it, then lets the counterweight raise the water.

Still used along the Nile and in parts of Asia: Farmers worked the shadoof from dawn to dusk.
