neuroglia

Neural support cells

Neuroglia are the non-neuronal cells of the nervous system—the supporting cast to neurons.

They provide structural support, insulation, and protection for nerve cells, and help maintain the chemical environment neurons need to function.

Also called glial cells or simply glia: Neuroglia outnumber neurons in the brain.
