weird

Defying normal expectations

Weird is a general-purpose adjective to characterize anything that is unexpected or not easily explained: Where are those weird noises coming from?

When someone’s behavior is described as weird it suggests that it does not conform to norms: It was weird that she didn’t acknowledge the invitation but then showed up.

A weird look is one that is clearly expressive, but unclear as to what it expresses: He gave me a weird look when I asked about his plans for the evening.
