waterspout

Tornado over water

A waterspout is a tornado that forms over water, appearing as a rotating column of air and mist extending from a cloud to the water's surface: We watched a waterspout form over the bay.

Waterspouts are usually weaker than land tornadoes but can still be dangerous to boats.

Separately, a waterspout is a pipe or spout that discharges water, as on a fountain or roof gutter.
