fire whirl

Rotating flame vortex

A fire whirl is a rotating column of fire and ash that forms when intense heat and turbulent wind conditions cause flames to spin upward in a vortex.

These phenomena occur during large wildfires, structure fires, or controlled burns when rising hot air meets crosswinds at certain angles.

Fire whirls range from small dust-devil-sized funnels to massive tornado-like columns that can reach temperatures exceeding 2,000°F and generate winds strong enough to uproot trees.

They are also called fire tornadoes or fire devils.
