waterspouts

Tornadoes over water

Waterspouts are rotating columns of water and spray that form over bodies of water, essentially tornadoes over seas or lakes.

They descend from storm clouds in a funnel shape, drawing water upward: We watched a waterspout form over the bay.

The term also refers to pipes or spouts that discharge water, as from a roof gutter.
