vocal fold

Voice-producing tissue pair

The vocal folds are the two bands of muscle tissue in the larynx that vibrate to produce voice.

Air from the lungs passes between them, causing vibration at different frequencies to create speech and singing.

Also called vocal cords, though they are folds rather than cords.

Strain or damage to the vocal folds causes hoarseness or loss of voice.
