collateral ligament

Knee's side support

A collateral ligament is one of the strong bands of tissue flanking a joint, preventing sideways movement.

The knee and elbow each have two—medial and lateral—that stabilize the joint against forces from either side: She tore her medial collateral ligament playing soccer.

Finger and toe joints have them too.
