hyoid

Throat's floating bone

The hyoid is a small U-shaped bone in the neck, positioned between the chin and thyroid cartilage.

Unlike most bones, it doesn't articulate with any other bone—it's suspended by muscles and ligaments, supporting the tongue and enabling swallowing and speech.

In forensic contexts, a fractured hyoid may indicate strangulation.
