auditory nerve

Sound signal conduit

The auditory nerve carries signals from the inner ear to the brain, enabling hearing.

Also called the acoustic nerve or cochlear nerve, it transmits information about sound—pitch, volume, and timing—that the brain interprets as speech, music, or noise.

Damage to the auditory nerve causes hearing loss that hearing aids cannot fully correct.
