viol

Renaissance bowed instrument

A viol is a stringed instrument played with a bow, popular from the 15th through 18th centuries before being largely displaced by the violin family.

Viols have frets, flat backs, and six strings, and are held upright between the legs rather than under the chin.

The viola da gamba is the most familiar member of the viol family.
