gut strings
Animal fiber strings
Gut strings are musical instrument strings made from animal intestines, traditionally sheep or goat.
Before synthetic materials, gut was standard for violins, cellos, guitars, and tennis rackets.
Gut strings produce a warmer, more resonant tone than steel or nylon alternatives, which is why some classical musicians still prefer them: She insists on gut strings for her baroque violin.
