sackbut
Early slide brass
A sackbut is an early form of the trombone, used from the Renaissance through the Baroque period.
It has a narrower bell and produces a softer, more blended tone than the modern trombone.
The name likely comes from French words meaning "push-pull," describing how the player moves the slide: a consort of sackbuts and cornetts.
