violist
Viola section member
A violist is a person who plays the viola, the stringed instrument slightly larger than a violin with a deeper, mellower tone.
The word has two pronunciations: vee-OH-list when referring to viola players, and VY-uh-list for the rare sense of someone who plays the viol, an older family of stringed instruments.
The violist took her seat between the second violins and the cellos.
