cornett

Curved wooden aerophone

A cornett is a wind instrument prominent in Renaissance and early Baroque music, made of wood or ivory with finger holes like a recorder but played with a cup-shaped mouthpiece like a brass instrument.

The hybrid design produced a tone prized for blending with voices in church music.

Not to be confused with the brass cornet, which emerged centuries later.
