utopias

Ideal imagined places

Utopias is the plural of utopia, an imagined place or state where everything is perfect—social conditions, government, human nature itself.

The word was coined by Thomas More for his 1516 book describing an ideal island society.

Because such perfection proves impossible, utopia often carries ironic weight: Their utopias always seem to require someone in charge.

Dystopia is the opposite.
