tube worm
Hydrothermal vent inhabitant
A tube worm is any of various marine worms that build and live inside protective tubes, often attached to rocks, seafloor vents, or other surfaces.
The tubes may be constructed from secreted calcium carbonate, mucus, or cemented sediment.
Giant tube worms near hydrothermal vents can reach several feet in length and survive without sunlight, hosting bacteria that convert chemicals into energy.
