sand dollar

Flat sea urchin

A sand dollar is a flat, disc-shaped sea urchin that lives in sandy ocean floors.

The familiar white "shell" found on beaches is actually the animal's skeleton, called a test, left behind after death.

Living sand dollars are covered in short, velvety spines and burrow just beneath the sand's surface.

The name comes from their resemblance to large coins.
