fire coral

Burning marine organism

Fire coral isn't actually coral but a colonial marine organism more closely related to jellyfish and anemones.

The name comes from the intense burning pain its stinging cells inflict on contact with bare skin.

Found in tropical waters, fire coral forms hard, often yellowish structures that divers learn to avoid: I brushed against fire coral and my arm burned for hours.
